Sprinting for Sweets

Yesterday was Marathon Monday in Boston. Sweat poured down your face, your muscles were pushed to the limit, you threw back water like it was your job…and that was just you pushing through the crowds and cheering the runners on. Good job out there, your spirit was appreciated and should be rewarded. We are here to help you treat yourself with this list of post-marathon indulgences around the city, whether you actually ran or just watched. Some of the biggest, baddest, most decadent treats can be found on this list and are waiting for you to seek them out. But, please, walk don’t run, we know you exerted a lot of energy yesterday. *wink, wink*

26.2 miles is intense, you need some protein! Naturally you should have the GIANT Nutter Butter from Sweet Cheeks in the Fenway area. This cookie is truly as big as your face so sharing is encouraged…or not. Two chewy peanut butter oatmeal cookies with smooth, luscious peanut butter moose sandwiched in between and sprinkled with sea salt. Yes please!

Not only does Toscanini’s offer the best ice cream in all of Boston, they make killer sundaes. Jaw-dropping-don’t-you-dare-try-to-steal-a-bite-of-my-sundae sundaes. They top their rich, creamy ice cream with glossy, dark chocolate fudge, fresh cream whipped just the right amount and allllll the sprinkles! Go there. Right now.

“Sweet Stuff” from The Friendly Toast

Sometimes the best dessert is disguised as breakfast. At The Friendly Toast innocent waffles are covered in decadent toppings such as caramelized bananas, pineapples and nuts. Pancakes are dolled up with bananas, chocolate chips, peanut butter, whipped cream and bacon. Wait, are we talking about breakfast? Yep. So if you want to pretend to eat breakfast but really have dessert (shhh, we won’t tell) then The Friendly Toast is your spot.

Boston Cream Doughnut from Union Square Doughnuts

The Boston Cream doughnut from Union Square Doughnuts is not just a doughnut, it’s a DOUGHNUT. Fluffy and perfectly fried, this treat is filled with the smoothest, vanilla-iest pastry cream with specs of vanilla bean throughout and then dipped in a silky, rich, dark chocolate frosting. This doughnut is a two-hander, mess-all-over-your-face kind of indulgence. It should come with a do not disturb sign, and a bib.

Skillet Chocolate Chip Cookie from Blue Dragon

The best part of baking chocolate chip cookies at home is snagging one right off the pan before they are fully cooled, oozy bursts of chocolate chips and dough that falls apart in your hands are heaven. At Blue Dragon they capture this concept by serving a huge cookie in a deep-dish skillet, fresh out of the oven, drizzled in soy caramel with a generous scoop of ice cream melting over top. You know you want it. We could certainly go for one right now!

The Baked Alaska from Oleana is like a firework on the plate. A true celebration dessert—it’s piled high with toasted meringue that covers coconut ice cream and sits in passion fruit caramel. The flavors are bright and surprising, keeping you going back for more until the plate is clean. For us, eating this dessert is like crossing the finish line.
