We’ve got sweets on our minds, and honestly when don’t we? April showers are sure to bring May flowers this year because true to the saying this spring has already been a rainy one. But it’s time to put the umbrellas in the closet because Boston is blossoming with sweet treats that have floral flavors. We heard that girls like a bouquet of rose cupcakes just as much as a bouquet of actual roses…..just saying….

Rose Jam from Sofra Bakery & Cafe

Sofra has a special place in our hearts for the magical Middle Eastern flavors they create. They’ve been selling jars of their homemade rose petal jam for years now and it’s one of our favorite spring purchases. Some people think of rose as only being for candles and bathroom spray, but when used in the proper proportions it is a beautiful flavor and a joy to eat. This jam goes especially well on a buttery pastry.

Hibiscus doughnut you ask? We see the quizzical look on your face, but trust us, this is one of the most underrated doughnut flavors out there. Hibiscus is sweet, tart, and slightly floral but not in the perfume-y way. This doughnut will startle your tastebuds and keep you craving more.

Pink & Purple Rose Cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcake

If you want to stop and smell the roses this spring, why not stick your nose in a cupcake? That’s our preference. Georgetown Cupcake is that place with the line out the door where people are like, “what are they waiting for??” If you want a cupcake this is where you have to go. We’ve waited in line and it’s worth it. For the month of May they offer classic Madagascar bourbon vanilla cupcakes decorated with light purple and pink vanilla buttercream frosting “roses.” Are you smiling yet?

Sweet Lavender Ice Cream from Fomu

We’re kind of obsessed with Fomu right now. They are the final stop on our new Allston Arts & Eats Tour and they’re always churning up something exciting. This is the kind of place where you have the internal debate over how many flavors it’s socially acceptable to try before deciding. They capture the essence of spring with their sweet lavender flavor. Their ice cream is thick and smooth, and all coconut based (shhh, their ice cream is vegan…but you would never know!).

Gibassier from Clear Flour Bread

A Gibassier, aside from sounding fancy-shmancy, is a fluffy, brioche-like pastry from the South of France that is traditionally made with fruited olive oil and flavored with anise, candied orange peel, and orange blossom water. The subtle and delicate orange flavor that Clear Flour uses is floral and sweet, lovely for breakfast, or any time of day really.
