Tucked away in the Brookline neighborhood, just off the beaten path of the bustling Commonwealth Avenue, you will find this gem. You don’t even have to be fully inside the door before you start to smell the wonderment they are conjuring up in this quaint bakery. The tall pastry cart is decked out with holiday specialties that change daily, in addition to all of their staple pastries, cookies and breads that cover the counters and surround the shop. Look out for their apple strudel, gingerbread, and Stollen (yeasted sweet bread that is enriched with butter, eggs and almond paste, and filled with rum soaked fruit and almonds). One of the most special places not only to enjoy pastries, but also to enjoy food and drinks is Sofra Bakery & Café. Once you step inside you are whisked off to a magical land filled with smells and ingredients you may not recognize immediately. This Turkish café creates some of the most incredibly creative and scrumptious pastries in the city using unique ingredients such as homemade milk jam and rose jam. Come the holidays, they are always ready with their oatmeal stout gingerbread and sticky toffee pudding. These are close-your-eyes-and-get-lost-in-the-moment kind of desserts.

A staple in Boston’s historic North End, Bova’s Bakery makes some of the best cannolis around (sorry Mike’s and Modern, we love you too). Cannolis can be used to celebrate every occasion, and Bova’s are truly celebration-worthy. They are also open 24 hours a day, so you can indulge that holiday craving at any time of day…or night. Bova’s also makes holiday pies, but really, it is all about the cannolis! Head on over and enjoy a holiday cannoli in the North End, you might as well stop for some pasta as well while you’re over there. It is the holidays after all!
